August Willian Walters Jr. 1924-2008 Was born and raised in San Jose. He was the son of Francesca Narvaez and August William Walters Sr both natives of San Jose. He lived his childhood on Locust Street across from Woodrow Wilson Jr High which he had attended. He graduated from San Jose High School in 1942, and joined the submarine service. He married his high school sweetheart Marian Tanner in 1944 and lived with his wife on San Juan Ave in San Jose until his retirement a few years following his wife's death in 1982. He then bought a ranch in Angels Camp and worked the ranch until health required he return to city life. He married Molly Collpits in 1989, first living in Sacramento, and then moving with her to her native England. August returned to Sacramento from England in 1998. He then returned to San Jose after a severe illness. He spent his last year at the VA Hospital in Menlo Park. From 1942 until 1946 he served his country during World War II as a submarine torpedo man First Class, serving on the USS Jack and the USS Bugera. He received a Presidential Citation for bravery. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. The war had a deep impact on him. He vividly remembered every detail of the war and told riveting stories about his experiences. August was a sixth generation descendent of the Alviso, Amesquito, Bernal, Galindo and Pinto Families of the De Anza Expedition of 1775-1776 of whom several were the founding families of Pueblo San Jose. His great great grandfather Augustine Narvaez was Alcalde (Mayor) of San Jose in 1821, and was the recipient of the"San Juan Bautista" land grant given in 1844 by Governor Micheltorena. Its boundaries enclose most of San Jose's Hillsdale, and Willow Glen areas. August Walters was a member of the genealogy association Los Californianos. August was the son of August William Walters Sr. His grandfather William Walters came to San Jose in the mid 1800's. All were Master Butchers. August worked for his grandfather and his father in markets on Auzerais and Vine Streets and at First and Virginia streets. August, who was called Mike, had a market on Bascom and Union until fire destroyed it in the mid sixties. He worked for San Jose Meats and a variety of retail and wholesale places spending many years at Duke and Hanley Meats in Mid Town Market in Los Altos until his retirement. He was a member of Butcher's union Local 506 and a vocal supporter of workers' rights. August was active in his union. He had a keen mind and sharp memory and fascinated all who listened with his many stories of adventure as a submarine sailor, butcher, rancher and traveler. He is preceded in death by his first wife Marian Tanner, his daughter Pamela Jean Walters, his grandson Michael Andrew Walters and his sisters Gladys Colla and Edith Pimentel. He is survived by his son Ronald Walters, daughter Nancy Walters, his son-in-law Thomas Nycz, his four grandchildren Roger Walters, Jeffrey Walters, Tinna Marie Walters and John Paul Walters and two great grandchildren Tiddus and Luna. He had many wonderful friends. Visitation will be on Wed., April 9th 3-9pm at Chapel of Flowers, 900 South 2nd street in San Jose with Vigil Service at 7pm at above chapel. Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Thursday, April 10th at 9am, entombment to follow after mass.
