Bernard Bernie Ben Uncle Bernie August Schaefers, of San Jose, California, born on January 22, 1947 in Wenatchee, Washington, to the late Bernard Mary Schaefers and the late Marcella Gertrude Schaefers, passed away at age 71 on August 20, 2018 in San Jose, California with his children by his side. He attended Camden High School, and then DeAnza College to a pursue a possible firefighting career. Bernie s life was newspapers. From riding his bike to a riding a truck to deliver the paper for the San Jose Mercury News. From 1959-1964, Bernie began his career as a paper carrier for the Merc, becoming part of the Honor carrier program, which was based off of attitude, service, bills and starts. From 1965 to 1967, Bernie served in the United States Army. After returning from service, he started off working the phone lines at the Mercury News, moving up to the draw desk and then achieving a District Manager position. He worked alongside his brother Dan for the next several years, until his brother moved up to Lake County. Bernie would continue to work as a well-loved and accoladed District Manager until retiring in 2005. Bernie was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Francis Schaefers; father-in-law Marlowe Edwin Ryan; and great-niece Charlotte Paige Schaefers. He is survived by his son, Ryan Bernard Schaefers (Jennifer); daughter, Katherine Lynn Schaefers; grandson Connor Ryan Schaefers; mother-in-law Treva Louise Ryan; sister-in-law Barbara Susan Schaefers; nieces, Marcella Elaine Psalmonds (Phillip) and Stacey Lyn Ballard; and nephews, Cory Edwin Schaefers (Kara), Eric Christopher Schaefers (Regina), and Daniel Scott Schaefers; and eight great-nieces and nephews, plus many more family and friends. He loved tennis and was always good for a couple of jokes. Bernie s second home was in Clearlake where he liked riding his quad, fishing, BBQ-ing, and putzing around. He enjoyed fishing, noodling, abalone diving, tearing up a rug, recreational softball, karate, cars, spending time with his kids, videorecording sporting events/life achievements/family holidays, and putzing around town. Bernie was a very kind and caring person willing to help people that needed it. He was a supporter of the Disabled Veterans Charity and the Wounded Warrior Project, and a volunteer at Meals on Wheels and the Second Harvest Food Bank. Friends and family can pay their respects at the funeral service on Sunday, September 2 at 11:00 a.m., at the Chapel of Flowers, 900 South 2nd Street, San Jose, (408) 294-9663.
