UntitledFreda Marie Hinman DoakFreda Marie Hinman Doak, daughter of Ulysses Grant Hinman and Josephine DeSoto Hinman, was born January 2, 1914 in San Jose. She passed away November 1, 2006 in the same house on Mastic Street in which she was born. Freda was preceded in passing by her loving husband Thomas William Doak and her brothers Bud, Leo, and Fred Hinman.Freda grew up in San Jose, attending Sacred Heart Grammar School, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High, and San Jose High School. Upon graduation, Freda went to work at the National Dollar Store in downtown San Jose. Freda met and married Thomas Doak on April 27, 1938. They began a life together that would span 61 years, during which five children were born (Thomas, David, Donald, Marian and Fred). She left behind nine grandchildren (Jane, Thomas, Jennifer, Sally, Elizabeth, Nicole, John, Carolyn, and Joshua) and six great-grandchildren (Thomas, Nicholas, Mallory, William, Jacob, and Isabella). Mrs. Doak was dedicated to the care and well-being of her family. While Mrs. Doak's older sons were attending Washington School she was active in school fund-raising and clothing drives, served as P.T.A. president for two terms and was instrumental in supporting the efforts of a young recreation director, Hank Rosendin, in establishing an after-school sports/ recreation program.In subsequent years, Mrs. Doak worked in the Woodrow Wilson school cafeteria, Del Monte Cannery, County Fair husbandry office, and for 12 years at the Almaden Emporium from where she retired.Over the years Mrs. Doak enjoyed occasional trips to Reno, gardening, crocheting and cooking, especially tamales for which she was famous among family and friends.May the memories of who she was be a comfort to those who loved her.A memorial service celebrating Mrs. Doak's life will be held on November 9 at 10:30 at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, 5100 Camden Avenue, San Jose, CA.Memorial gifts in Freda's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2065 W.
