UntitledWester Sweet Feb. 24, 1925 - Jan. 29, 2007Wester Sweet the fourth child of George Washington Sweet and Jimmie Ruth Wester Sweet, was born born February 24, 1925 in Jacksonville, Florida. Flossie Isaacs (deceased); Anita Collins (deceased); Dorothy Dickenson of Queens New York; Margie Dallas (deceased); Wilhelmena Webber (deceased); James W. Sweet of San Jose, CA; Roscoe Sweet (deceased); Clifford Sweet of Berkeley.Wester Sweet's early childhood education and development took place in the small poor farming community of Jupiter, Florida. At the age of 14 he left home and went to live with his grandmother in Havana, Florida, where he graduated from high school. Upon graduation from high school he realized he needed a job but jobs were very scarce in Havana, Florida. Wester had heard about ship building in Oakland, California and he decided to go to Oakland to get a job in the shipbuilding industry. Wester was unable to get a job in the ship building industry, so he enlisted into U.S. Marines. He served in the Marine Corp in the South Pacific. In 1945 when the war was over he returned to Oakland, California and started working in the U.S. Post Office and using his G.I. Bill benefits began attending college. He attended U.C. Berkeley and Hasting Law School. In the summer of 1956 he moved to San Jose, CA. Wester was admitted to the California Bar District of Northern California in June of 1957. He set up his practice in San Jose, CA that same year. Wester's passion was law and the Civil Rights struggles of the 1950's and 1960's occured at the time he opened his practice. He was the Western Regions Secretary for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Wester was tempered by the need to find solutions to problems and the generosity by his father he had witnessed. He felt he had a Civic responsibility to change those things he perceived as having double standards.Wester will be lovingly remembered by his sister Dorothy Dickenson of Queens, New York. Sweet of San Jose, CA and Clifford Sweet of Berkeley, CA; brothers-in-law Harry Dickenson of New York; Sterling Collins of Dania, Florida, sisters-in-law Mayra Reyes Sweet of San Jose, CA; Tomasina Sweet of San Jose, CA; nieces Harriet Nunley, Sheradi Monroe, Kimberly Ford, Harriet Dickenson, Michelle Dallas, Marsha Isaacs, Darlene Sweet and Lynda Webber. Nephews Richard Collins, Rodney Collins, Dwight Collins, Ronald Dallas, James Dallas, Fredrick Isaacs, Brian Isaacs, Archie Webber, Randall Webber, Eric Sweet, James E. Sweet, Brian Moody and Dean Moody. God son Bobby Thomas and a host of other relatives and friends.The funeral will be held at Antioch Baptist Church, 268 East Julian St., San Jose, CA 95112, on February 9, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Repast will be held at the Church following the celebration of Wester Sweet's life. Interment will be held at the Gustine Military Cemetery in Gustine, CA on February 12, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by Chapel of Flowers.
