Wilbur Marcus Concklin "Wil"Nov. 23, 1927-June 23, 2015Resident of San JoseBorn and reared in San Jose, Wil died on June 23 at the age of 87. After attending Lincoln High, where he was named class valedictorian and served as student-body president, Wil attended San Jose State College, earning his AB Degree in 1950 and an MA in physical education in 1956. During his undergrad years, he lettered in both varsity baseball and football. Having excelled for four years at third base and shortstop for the Spartans, Wil signed a professional contract with the Pittsburg Pirates and played one year of pro ball. (He often remarked, "The curve ball did me in.")In 1951, following a two-year army hitch, Wil began his long and distinguished career as an educator at James Lick High School, where he taught history and physical education; he also coached football and baseball. In 1958 he was promoted to assistant principal of Andrew Hill, where he remained until 1963 when he was named principal of the newly opening Mt. Pleasant High. He remained in this position for the next 24 years before retiring in 1987. Despite a busy schedule, Wil found time, over the years, to build a room-size miniature railway, play golf, attend area jazz concerts, and spend time in his garage workshop.Wil was preceded in death by his mother and father, May and Ralph Concklin, and his brother Jerry. He is survived by Beth, his devoted wife of 23 years; his loving daughter, Carol Nalty (Sean); granddaughters, Caitlin and Nicole; stepson and daughter, Marc and Valorie Auger; brother, Steve (John); and sister, Millie Hopkins (Gary). In addition to his immediate family, several nephews and a legion of faithful friends shall fondly remember Wil.A memorial service for Wil will be held on July 13 at 10:30AM at Chapel of Flowers. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital (LPCH), or a charity of choice.
